The Butterfly Place
Westford, MA

Engineer: Goldsmith, Prest & Ringwall, Inc.

Owner George Leslie approached Senate Construction to help him rebuild the atrium with materials that would last. The old atrium was constructed from structural wood beams and glass panels. George had been bracing up the structure to keep his operation open as the wood kept detraining, resulting in the collapse of the structure in July 2009.

Working closely with Goldsmith Prest & Ringwall’s structural engineer, Val Prest, Senate Construction designed a maintenance-free building that will last for generations to come. Using masonry block, galvanized structural steel, and clear polycarbonate panels, the Senate team built the new atrium, meeting the design criteria needed to support the many species of butterflies and plants for which George Leslie and The Butterfly Place are known.
